Greetings, Family!
How many “you”s are there? Only one! So if you value yourself, it’s imperative that you take care of “you!”
That’s why I talk about self-care. I’ve been yelling from the rooftops for over 30 years that we have to put on our own oxygen mask first—then we can help those around us.
That’s what self-care is about: making sure you have enough inner resources to help those around you.
In order to do that, we focus on The 5 Pillars of Self-Care, which are:
Each one of these pillars is necessary, and they all work together. Just briefly, let’s look at them.
Nutritious food is food that actually provides nutrition. That sounds simple enough, right?
But much of what we put into our mouths is not actually food by that definition. Most of what we purchase that’s in a bag, box or plastic container isn’t food; it’s filler. It provides no nutritional value.
Read ingredients to see what you’re putting into your body; then, go to the produce section and buy some actual food.
Clean water is vital for our health because we’re over 75% water.
The rule of thumb is that we need half our weight (measured in pounds) in ounces of water. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, your body needs 75 ounces of water every day. That varies, depending on how much you exercise and the temperature.
No one can overestimate the value of fresh air!
Without any air, we cease to exist on this plane. Without clean air, our bodies become bogged down and full of the minutia that floats around in the air, and we get sick. Periodically, we need to clean out our own airways.
Deep breathing in a place where the air is clean can help us revive and refresh.
One way to help us breathe in more air is through exercise.
Exhilarating exercise is crucial to help keep our bodies not only strong but flexible. We need to flex our organs, fortify our muscles, and flush our systems; and all of that is done through various forms of exercise.
And finally, rejuvenating rest is crucial.
All sleep isn’t rest. Have you had those days when you wake up tired? That’s because you didn’t rest.
Resting is when your mind and your body relax, and your whole self sleeps. If your mind is still racing, you’re not resting. If you’re not resting, your mind doesn’t function well when you’re awake.
So, you can see the importance of engaging in all 5 Pillars of Self-Care.
